Tournament system

The 2021 IWAS Powerchair Hockey European Chamhpionship will be played in the Pajulahti Olympic and Paralympic Training Center, Lahti, Finland on 31/5–7/6/2021. There will be eight countries taking part in the tournament, including the host country Finland. The other teams are Denmark, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Belgium and Spain.

The eight teams are divided in two pools. Pool A: the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland. Pool B: Italy, Spain, Germany, Finland. Teams will be awarded two points for each win, one point for each draw and zero points for each loss during the preliminary round. The duration of the Powerchair Hockey match is 2x20 minutes. There will be no extra time in the preliminary round matches.

At the end of the preliminary round, if two or more teams are tied in point totals, the standings shall be determined based on points gained in the games between the tied teams. If there’s still a tie, the standings will be decided on the basis of the goal difference among the tied teams, during only those games when they played each other. If there’s still a tie, the standings will be decided on which team scored the most goals in the preliminary round games between the tied teams. If there’s still a tie, the standings will be decided on the basis of the goal difference among the tied teams during all preliminary round games. If there’s still a tie, the standings will be decided based on which team scored the most goals during all preliminary round games. If there's still a tie, there will be a penalty shootout between the tied teams.

Pool matches are played from Wednesday 2nd to Friday 4th of June and the top two teams from each pool will proceed to the semifinals played on Saturday 5th of June. Winner of the pool will play against the second placed team from the other pool in the semifinal.

The teams placed third and fourth in the pool stage play their first placing matches on Saturday 5th of June. The third placed team will meet the fourth placed team from the other pool. On Sunday 6th of June the winners of these placing matches will meet in a match for the 5th place and the losers will meet in a match for the 7th place.

Bronze medal match and gold medal match are played on Sunday 6th of June.

Play off matches will be played until the winner is decided. If the match is tied after regular playing time, there will be a sudden death 10 minute extra time. If the match is still tied after extra time, the winner will be decided in the penalty shootout. Both teams pick five shooters. Their combined point tally can not exceed 12 points. If the penalty shootout is still tied after five shooters, the penalty shootout will continue one pair at a time until the winner is clear.
